Are you tired of chasing goals that leave you feeling empty? Learn the surprising truth about the limitations of goal-setting and how setting directions can help you live a life that truly gives you purpose and fulfillment
Dr. Asma Naheed
As Steve Jobs once said, “Our time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” This means setting the direction of your life journey is like adjusting the sails. Instead of setting life goals, I believe in setting a life direction, which means figuring out what would create a fun, meaningful, and compelling journey.
The Problem with Goals
Many high achievers I’ve worked with over the years reach their goals, but they miss their lives because they are trapped by the strict boundaries they have created. They reach their goals and discover they were the wrong goals, so they choose the wrong path to get there because no one taught them how to set goals that would give them the life and the career they wanted.
A Better Approach
Before setting yearly goals, ask yourself:
– How do I want to spend my time?
– What daily activities make me excited?
– What do I want to learn?
– Who do I want to surround myself with?
– What inspires me?
– What are my priorities?
The Power of Direction
With the right direction, it doesn’t matter if you don’t reach your goal. Going in the right direction is what matters. Focus is key. Without it, our abilities and talent are useless and we may not be able to reach our full potential.
Setting Effective Goals
– Make goals concrete and exciting
– Focus your energy in positive directions
– Be willing to change goals as priorities change
As Brain Tracy said, “Goals allow you to control the direction of change in your favor.” By setting directions and focusing on what truly matters, we can create a fulfilling and meaningful life.
